Please Excuse the Dust

I'm starting a redesign for this blog. Hopefully it will serve a few purposes: 1) a fresh start mentally and a chance to recommit, both to blogging and getting healthy; 2) work on some of my blogging skills; 3) give me something to focus on, a project that will keep me from getting bored (and eating too much); 4) and just cause I want to freshen this up and have some fun.

So, sorry if it is a bit messy for a bit. I'm hoping it won't take too long. All links, previous posts and most the content will stay the same.

Taking Measurements

I started taking my measurements..waist, hips, thighs, etc. I figured it couldn't hurt, and might help me understand better how my body is changing. It's hard to see the changes sometimes, but numbers are very easy to understand.

I took my second measurements today. And it's good to see some positive results. :) But the only thing is that I feel like I don't know exactly where/how I took my measurements last time. So I didn't know how accurate the changes were. I followed the Weight Watchers Guidelines (you can find them here) but I'm still not sure I did it the exact same way I did last time. So I think I'm going to start taking them every week for awhile. This way I get use to taking measurements and hopefully I will become more consistent.

Adventures in Cooking: Salmon and Veggies

If you know me at all, you know that I typically eat a black bean and cheese burrito for dinner almost every night! It's easy, it's tasty...and not terribly bad for me. And when getting home from the gym at 8:00 PM it just perfect.

Needless to say, eating this on a regular basis has not done wonders on my cooking skills. I have two other signature dishes that I will make on occasion, but I am not a good cook by any means. And honestly, I don't have too much of a desire to be. I can throw together a great salad and I love breakfast, but besides that I'm just fine with my bean burrito. But....

In my get-healthy journey I have often thought to myself it would probably be a good idea to add some other healthy dishes to my nightly routine. So with that goal in mind tonight I made salmon and veggies.

Ok, so not the hardest dish. Just grilled the salmon on the stove with a grill pan and cooked the veggies in the microwave.

But, it wasn't a bean burrito and I'm proud of that! It was pretty tasty too! Hopefully I can have a few more nights sans bean burrito. ;)

Oh...but I do love that bean burrito...

Because Mall Walking is Not An Option

I joined a gym this year in Connecticut (near my work). It's cheap and has exactly what I need right now. And honestly, I can't afford anything else. The only kicker is that I can only go to that one location. Which leaves me with no gym to go to when I don't drive to work. Oh, and it's the middle of January and has been snowing a lot and it hasn't been out of the 30s in days. I love walking and getting outside, but everything I just mentioned requires me to have a bit motivation to get out and move my butt around on the weekends. I considered mall walking, but my ex is a manager at a dept store in the mall...and...well...I just don't feel like running into my ex while I'm mall walking. Not the sexiest thing.

But, I have to keep moving when I can't go to the gym. And this week I have been pretty good at doing that. On Wednesday we had a mini snow storm which meant working from home. I thought I wasn't going to get in a workout that day, but just before the sun went down I talked myself into going outside and walking. I had to find a new route because most of the sidewalks were not shoveled yet and I didn't want to walk out on the streets where there was heavy traffic. So I went on a bit of journey to places I haven't been before and it was fun.

Today I did one of my usual walks. It's about a 4.3 mile walk and I recently added a killer hill right in the beginning to get my heart pumpin. 6th Avenue in Nyack is one of the STEEPEST roads I have ever seen in my life. It actually makes me a little nervous to drive down it and I have no idea how people drive on it when it's snowing and slippery. I'm pretty sure they probably don't.

Anyway, here is the route I take:
The arrow points to the steep hill.
Gmap Pedometer is a great little tool to have. This is the first time I recorded this route and I was surprised how long of a walk it was. I thought I was only walking about 3 miles.

Point to all this is I have to remember how much I love being outside and how great I feel after a good walk. Even if it's freezing outside and I have to be careful not to slip on the ice. I don't get outside nearly enough these days. Which is hard for me. I use to spend my entire summers living outdoors. Now I rarely get a chance to relax in the sunshine. I need to use my weekends to be outside. Because, really, the opportunities are endless.
